BASECAMP Field Notes: Stress & How It Affects Our Bodies

When we think of stress and how it affects our bodies, lack of sleep, upset stomach, tight muscles, and headaches are often the first to come to mind. But did you know stress negatively affects your heart and its functions?

If you are often stressed you are more likely to have high blood pressure, higher than normal resting heart rates, and irregular heartbeats, to name a few.  Studies have also shown that stress can affect the way blood clots, leading to future heart attacks. Hormones that are released during stressful times are also linked to weight gain, increases in inflammation, and poor diet choices.  All in all, it is not good for your body to be exposed to stress hormones for extended periods of time.

Any time of year can bring on stress as each individual experiences life differently - holidays, timely memories, financial deadlines, life changes. What we want you to remember is the number one way to combat stress… EXERCISE!  Staying active, especially during high stress times will greatly improve sleep patterns, elevate mood, ward off weight gain, and decrease blood pressure.

As we exit the season of shorter daylight hours, colder weather, holiday parties and treats that typically hinder a normal exercise routine, we encourage you to peel off those layers, throw open your curtains and lace up those shoes. Exercise does not need to be complicated.

Here are a few simple tips to help!

  • Start small by parking far away from your shopping destination or errand location. You can event take a lap around the mall before going into any stores.

  • Plan activities outside with family - walk to the park, visit a farmers market, hiking or even a stroll around the neighborhood.

  • Sign up for a local race to keep you motivated - most races allow walkers and runners.

  • Find an exercise video you enjoy and plan to do it several times a week.

  • Get a co-worker or friend to walk or run with you.

Remember, the best gift you can give yourself is your time. Your heart will thank you.
