Pregnancy & Future Heart Health

Heart disease and stroke is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the United States. Certain conditions which women experience during pregnancy can dramatically increase her risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future. Conditions that can double a woman’s risk of developing heart disease later in life: gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, pre-term labor, and intrauterine growth restriction. Dr. Lori Tam, cardiologist and medical director for Providence Heart Institute’s women’s heart wellness, offers a great overview on pregnancy and future heart health.

Women can take steps to better understand their unique symptoms of heart disease and to begin to reduce their risk of heart disease, which can significantly improve their chances of living a heart-healthy life.
